Biography

Nabil Helou is a Lebanese sculptor, born in Beiteddine in 1969, who lives and works in Lebanon. His sculptures are made in marble, basalt and cedar wood, and in painted fibreglass, and range from pieces under a metre high to monumental works for public sites.

His practice is organised in series. The Infinity series, made mostly in marble, includes The Milky Way (2024) and The Blue Moon (2026). A second strand centres on "Odd", an imagined character he conceives as an extra musical note. It appears in The Odds, a 2014 series of wood installations, and in the painted fibreglass works of Odd Frequency. Helou names his working principle the "Triple H": Heart, Head and Hands.

Helou trained at ALBA, the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts, which awarded him a master's in visual art in 1995, and he taught sculpture there until 2000. Between 1997 and 1998 he studied sculpture and virtual sculpture in France, at ENSAC. Solo exhibitions include Odditorium at the Al Bustan International Festival in 2014 and The Odd Frequency at M.Square Gallery, Beirut, in 2024. He received the Special Jury Prize at the Sursock Museum's Salon d'Automne in 1998 and MACAM's Contemporary Sculpture Award in 2014. He also designed the Murex d'Or trophy.
