Claude Moufarège

Claude Moufarège was born in 1951 in Dakar, Senegal, and lived there for nine years before moving to Beirut, where she grew up and studied. She trained in architecture in Lebanon, France and Canada and worked as an architect before settling in Paris in 2006. She paints in oil on canvas.

In the late 1990s she gave up architecture to concentrate on painting. Her subjects are portraits, seascapes and cities, and the work moves between figuration and abstraction. Her paintings of Beirut show its back streets and highways without people or cars. They are glimpsed through shuttered and curtained windows in sharp contrasts of light and dark, as in La tour bleue (2016), La Faille (2023) and the Clair obscur paintings of 2021 and 2022.

Moufarège held solo exhibitions at the Musée Robert Mouawad in Beirut in 2009 and at Artspace Hamra in Beirut in 2017. That year she also took part in Ourouba: The Eye of Lebanon at Beirut Art Fair. In 2026 Agial Art Gallery in Beirut presented her solo exhibition A Shadow of a Haunting.
