Biography

Alaa Mansour is a Lebanese artist, born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1989, and based between Beirut and Marseille. The organisers of the Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement call her a "research-based image-film-maker". She works in film, sound and installation, from single-screen films to a two-channel video installation.

Her film Aïnata dates from 2018, and The Mad Man's Laughter (2021) is a video of forty-two minutes. Her two-channel video installation untitled (the eclipse of the heart), 2024, lasts twenty-four minutes. For Becoming the Ocean, at Quechlet El Attarine, Tunis, from 24 October to 22 November 2026, she shows a new work, Divine Birds.

Mansour completed a master's degree in creation and filmmaking at Université Paris VIII in 2013. In 2023 she received the Video Art Production Grant of the Han Nefkens Foundation and Fundació Antoni Tàpies. Aïnata and The Mad Man's Laughter have screened at Visions du Réel, Transmediale, the European Media Art Festival and Impakt. Aïnata was also screened at the Sursock Museum in Beirut within Home Works 9, organised by Ashkal Alwan. TBA21 and Ashkal Alwan produced The Mad Man's Laughter together, and the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève has presented both films in its online programme.
