Biography

Moushegh Karavartanian is a Lebanese Armenian painter, born in Beirut in 1992, who lives and works in Beirut. He paints portraits, still lifes and landscapes, mainly in oil and acrylic on canvas, and also draws in pen on paper.

His subjects include family members, workers, close acquaintances and everyday forms, and his paintings deal with memory, identity and labour. Portrait of Grandmother 1 (2015), in acrylic and charcoal on canvas, is based on a photograph of his grandmother in a retirement home. Rebis (2023), in acrylic on canvas, reworks a piece from his series Immaculate Reflections. Rather than aiming for strict visual accuracy, he uses colour, distortion and light.

He studied fine arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture of the Lebanese University, taking a BA in 2015 and an MA in 2021. In 2016 he took part in Mashrou' Proletkult, an open-submission group exhibition at the AUB Byblos Bank Art Gallery, Beirut. He showed Immaculate Reflections in a solo exhibition at Formicaria, Hamra, Beirut, in 2023, and TIMELESS there in 2024.
