Biography
Hicham Lasri was born in Casablanca on 13 April 1977. He took a law degree before turning to writing for stage and screen. His teachers included Emmanuelle Sardou, a screenwriter, and Hassan Leghzouli, a filmmaker. His first screenplay, written in 2002, was for Nabil Ayouch's La légende d'Arhaz.
His feature films include The End and C'est eux les chiens (2013), which sets the 1981 riots in Morocco beside the February 20 Movement. The Berlinale chose his films four times from 2014 to 2018. He has published novels, including Sainte Rita (2015) and Punk Fitna (2024), and the graphic novels Vaudou (2015) and Fawda (2017).
Drawing runs alongside the films and books. His 2023 exhibition Bonheur factice presented drawings about a society shaped by digital self-display. In 2026 he began posting about one work a day online, mixing painting, collage, pencil and work on paper. Casablanca is a constant subject.
