Chaïbia Talal

Chaïbia Talal (1929 to 2004) was a self-taught Moroccan painter, born in Chtouka, near El Jadida. She lived and worked in Casablanca and painted in bright, strong colour.

In 1965 Pierre Gaudibert of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris came to her work through her son, a painter. Her first exhibition was at the Goethe-Institut in Casablanca in 1966. In the same year she showed at the Salon des Surindépendants in Paris and at Galerie Solstice in Paris. She went on to exhibit in École marocaine in Copenhagen and at the Kunstkabinett in Frankfurt (1969), and at Les Halles aux Idées in Paris (1970). In 1971 an exhibition toured Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakesh, Fez and Tangier. Later shows included the Biennale d'Art in Menton (1976) and the Fondation Joan Miró in Barcelona (1980).

In 2003 she received a gold medal from the Société académique française d'éducation et d'encouragement Arts-Sciences-Lettres in Paris. She died in Casablanca on 2 April 2004. Her work is in the collection of the Musée Mohammed VI d'Art Moderne et Contemporain in Rabat.
