Biography
Daniele Genadry (b. 1980, Baltimore, United States) is a Lebanese-American artist based in Paris and Beirut who works in painting, drawing, photography and printmaking. Her subjects are landscape, light and the way an image can hold its own sense of time. Her landscapes are painted in acrylic and oil on canvas, often as triptychs that stretch the horizon line. Lattices, folds, margins and grids often frame images. The paintings need time for the eye to adjust. She also draws in graphite on mylar and makes cyanotypes.
In 2017 Sharjah Art Foundation commissioned three large paintings for Sharjah Biennial 13: Light Fall, Lakelight and Blind Light. Blind Light uses a Yosemite waterfall photographed in the 19th century by Carleton E. Watkins and Eadweard Muybridge. Dimensions of Time (2025) began as a picture she took of a north Lebanese mountain from a moving car. A segment of a second picture, taken standing still, is set into it. Cactus (Still Time) (2025) lays a geometric pattern over that view. Trees (Transparent Time) (2026) is a vertical triptych 4.5 metres high, with trees framing a distant waterfall. She calls such images apparitions.
Genadry studied studio art and mathematics at Dartmouth College and completed her MFA at the Slade, London, in 2008. Solo exhibitions include The Fall at the Sursock Museum, Beirut (2016), and Slow Light at Beirut Art Center (2018). Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai, gave her an Artist's Room (2022 to 2023). Group exhibitions include La Fabrique des illusions at MUCEM, Marseille (2019), and Thinking Like a Mountain at GAMeC, Bergamo (2024). She received the Boghossian Foundation Prize (2020) and the Versailles Foundation Munn Artist Award (2024). Her work is in the collections of the Centre national des arts plastiques, the Sursock Museum and Jameel Arts Centre. She is represented by Taymour Grahne Projects.
