Biography
Bahaa Amer is an Egyptian painter, born in Cairo in 1977. His expressive, poetic paintings come close to surrealism. They turn to fantasy, dreams and inner spaces that lie beyond realistic depiction.
His first works answered the political and social upheavals of their time. Later paintings question authority and convention, and test how far appearances can be trusted. His knowledge of Egyptian history and of ancient techniques also feeds the work.
Amer took a bachelor's degree in art education in 2000 and a master's degree in restoration in 2009, and went on to study art criticism. Since 2014 his paintings have appeared in six Bonhams sales. In 2026 he took part in Formed by Dialogue II at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, organised by Art D'Égypte.
