Emirati artist Juma Alhaj has just opened his first institutional solo exhibition, and it asks something rare of its visitors: to slow down. Revelation is on view at 421 Arts Campus in Abu Dhabi's Mina Zayed until 10 January 2027, and it marks a significant moment both for one of the UAE's emerging artists and for an institution that has spent a decade nurturing them.

For anyone less familiar with it, 421 Arts Campus opened in 2015 as Warehouse421, inside a renovated warehouse in Mina Zayed that was repurposed with galleries, studios, courtyards, a library and an outdoor plaza. It describes itself as an independent platform for emerging artists and creative practitioners in the UAE and across the region. It marked its tenth anniversary on 15 November 2025, by which point, it said, it had supported more than 1,500 creative practitioners and delivered around 2,000 programmes, from residencies and grants to exhibitions.

Revelation is the product of one of those programmes. Alhaj took part in the 2025 cycle of 421's Artistic Development Program, facilitated by Jolaine Frizzell, an annual initiative that supports early-career artists in the UAE as they develop a cohesive body of work for their first institutional solo exhibition. He told The National that he joined the programme about two years ago.

So, what is it like? According to 421, the show begins in a bright, open space where engraved glass elements and a large-scale diptych carry the artist's gestural vocabulary, a set of inscriptions that move between the legible and the abstract. On the glass, the marks slip between visibility and disappearance, casting partial shadows and reflections. The National reports that the works include Balaa (2026), about how we count and measure our lives, and Traces (2026), in which engraved glass, light and shadow break his inscriptions into shifting fragments of meaning.

The final space, Hijr, is something else entirely. Dimly lit and carpeted, it is anchored by a monolithic water feature and surrounded by suspended elements that carry further inscriptions through light and shadow. 421 frames it around tafakkur, a sustained moment of attention and inward reflection, and visitors take off their shoes before they enter. "It's supposed to hug you like a cocoon, like a blanket," Alhaj told The National.

Born in the UAE in 1990, Alhaj works across painting, installation, sculpture and text, in a practice rooted in journaling, gestural mark-making and repetition. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication from the American University of Sharjah and a master's degree in international relations, and he now lives between Paris and Sharjah. As he told The National, he left a corporate career of some 15 years to commit to art full time. His earlier solo shows include Interoception (2026), The Return at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai (2023) and Frame of Mind (2021), all with Iris Projects, and his work is held in collections including the Barjeel Art Foundation, Qasr Al Watan, the Dubai Collection and the UAE Ministry of Culture.

Interestingly, he sees the show as a stage rather than a destination. "Revelation is not an ending point; it's just a checkpoint," he told The National. His advice to younger artists is just as quotable: "Find your own language, stick to your roots, but don't be confined by your roots."

Revelation opens alongside Archipelago of Whispers, a group exhibition curated by Deniz Kirkali and Elham Puriya Mehr that runs on the same dates. It explores what the curators call alternative infrastructures for knowledge-making, from whispers and murmurs to gossip and storytelling, through video, multichannel and sound installations in which, as 421 puts it, viewers become listeners and co-authors. The artists include Aliaskar Abarkas, Ruba Al-Sweel, Farah Al Qasimi, Gizem Karakaş, Yen Chun Lin, Omar Mismar and Ayman Zedani.

Perhaps what is most significant here is the model. The UAE is heading into its busiest art season yet, with Frieze Abu Dhabi from 19 to 22 November and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opening on 11 December, and it is easy for the big names to take all the oxygen. Programmes like 421's, which give an Emirati artist sustained support and a full institutional show, are exactly what our region needs if it is to grow its own artists rather than only import them.

We can't wait to see where this checkpoint leads him next.

Revelation and Archipelago of Whispers are on view at 421 Arts Campus, Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi, from 4 October 2026 to 10 January 2027.
