About
Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art was founded in 2010 and occupies a converted school building in Education City, Doha. It belongs to Qatar Museums. Its subject is Arab modern and contemporary art, together with work from places tied to the region by history and culture.
Qatar Museums and Qatar Foundation jointly own the collection of over 9,000 works. Sheikh Hassan bin Mohamed bin Ali Al Thani, the museum's founder and president, began assembling it in the early 1990s. Its first home was a pair of villas in Madinat Khalifa, Doha. Zeina Arida is the director; she previously ran the Sursock Museum in Beirut and, from 1997 to 2014, the Arab Image Foundation.
Mathaf's exhibitions have included Distilled Lessons: Abstraction in Arab Modernism (2023 to 2024), Seeing Is Believing: The Art and Influence of Gérôme (2024 to 2025), Wafa al-Hamad: Sites of Imagination (2025) and Resolutions: Celebrating 15 years of Mathaf (2025 to 2026). Entry to the museum and its special exhibitions is free, with tickets required.
