Biography

Seroj Barseghian is an Iranian Armenian painter born in Isfahan in 1953. He took a diploma at Tehran's School of Fine Arts in 1974. In 1982 he earned a BA at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Tehran, where he also lectured. His canvases are built from stripes and wavy bands of colour.

The physics of colour and waves has occupied him since 2003, a study shaped by a parallel career handling colour and image for textiles and design. Blue Sonata, his solo exhibition at +2 in Tehran in 2023 and his third with Dastan, set bands of blue in motion. The gallery tied the series to Nastaliq calligraphy and Iranian miniature painting, and read its blue as a sign of grief for Iran's Armenian minority.

His solo exhibitions began with Line Paintings at Afrand Gallery in Tehran in 1990. In 1994 the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art held a retrospective of his work. Later solo shows include Waves in 2019 and Coloured Waves in 2021, both at +2. He took part in Persian Contemporary Painters in Paris in 1996 and Mexico City in 1998, and in Modern Painting in Iran at the Imam Ali Museum in 2007. With Dastan he has shown at Artissima in Turin and at Art Dubai.
