Biography

Randa Maroufi was born in Casablanca in 1987. She works across film, photography, installation and performance, building staged scenes in which bodies occupy public or intimate spaces. Her films often reconstruct real situations with the people who live them, who take part as performers rather than as subjects.

Le Park (2015) shows young people in an abandoned amusement park in Casablanca, posed in tableaux drawn from social media images. Bab Sebta (2019) rebuilds scenes observed at the border of Ceuta, the Spanish enclave where thousands of people trade discounted goods every day. L'MINA (2025) turns to Jerada, a Moroccan mining town where coal is still dug informally after official extraction ended in 2001; residents helped design the set and play themselves.

Maroufi graduated from the Institut National des Beaux-Arts in Tétouan in 2010 and the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts d'Angers in 2013. She finished her studies at Le Fresnoy in Tourcoing in 2015 and was later an artist member of the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid. Her work has appeared at the Biennale de Lyon, the Museo Reina Sofía and the New Museum in New York. Her films have won many festival prizes, including the Grand Prix at Tampere in 2020. Collections holding her work include the CNAP and Mu.ZEE.
