Biography

Mouna Saboni (b. 1987, Rennes, France) is a French-Moroccan artist based in Rennes who works in photography and writing. Her subjects are identity, memory and how individuals relate to territory, including her own bond with the places she works in. Her approach is both documentary and poetic. Since 2018 she has written, painted or engraved text on and into her prints.

Saboni studied Social and Solidarity Economy to master's level before graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie, Arles, in 2012. The series Traverser has words engraved into the paper. Ceux que nos yeux cherchent et ceux avant eux encore draws on family archives. In January 2024 she spent a month at the Villa Medici, Rome, on the Medici Residency with the Lagardère Foundation. Her proposed project there, Les identités effacées (Erased identities), drew on Roman history and palimpsests of the Vatican Apostolic Library.

In 2012 her work was shown at the Rencontres d'Arles and entered the collection of the Fondation Neuflize. She received a Lagardère Foundation photography grant in 2020. IMAGOS, her two-person exhibition with Barbara Wildenboer, was held at the Fondation Montresso, Marrakech (2024). She is a resident artist of the foundation's Jardin Rouge residency. With Ibrahim Ballo and Hendrik Beikirch, she shows in Par-delà l'horizon at the Espace d'art Montresso, near Marrakech (2026 to 2027). Her work is in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Fondation Blachère and the Fondation Montresso. Galerie 127 has presented her work at the Approche photography salon.
