A Shadow of a Haunting

A Shadow of a Haunting is a solo exhibition of paintings by Claude Moufarège at Agial Art Gallery in Hamra, Beirut, from 10 September to 10 October 2026.

The exhibition presents nine oil paintings made between 2014 and 2023: Au lieu des larmes (2014), La ville renversés (2015), Au bout le ciel and La tour bleue (both 2016), Clair obscur I (2021), Clair obscur II (2022), and La Faille, La tombée de l'ombre and Après l'amour (all 2023). The exhibition text describes paintings that are "clearly architectural, the subjects spreading expansively through the back streets and highways of Beirut". Moufarège gives "an unpeopled version of the city, glimpsed through shuttered and curtained windows, memory and physical distance", a landscape "without cars, people, as if it is the middle of the night, and yet with the light of midday".

Moufarège was born in 1951 and is a Lebanese-French artist trained in architecture in Lebanon, France and Canada. Since the 2000s, according to the exhibition text, her painting has developed as "a sensitive language of memory and disappearance". Like many, the text notes, she has lived outside Lebanon for many years and periodically returns. She has held two solo exhibitions in Beirut, at Artspace gallery and at the Robert Mouawad Museum, and has shown at the Beirut Art Fair. She lives and works in Paris.
