About

The Çanakkale Biennial is organised by CABININ, the Çanakkale Biennial Initiative, with the Troy Culture Association, and was founded by Seyhan Boztepe. CABININ staged contemporary art exhibitions in the city from 2006 and held the first biennial in 2008. Its tenth edition, Metcezir / Ebb & Flow, opened in October 2026, twenty years after the initiative began.

The organisation's base is MAHAL, one of the nineteenth century acorn warehouses on Çay Kenarı, which handled the city's wholesale and export trade until the 1960s. The family of Fortüne and İzak Kumru restored the building in 2011, and CABININ opened it as MAHAL Sanat on 2 November 2013. Next door, StudioMAHAL opened in July 2022 with a guest studio upstairs and a floor for production, workshops and performance.

Between editions the biennial runs residencies and regional projects. These include the Deniz Villaları programme on ecological crossings in the Mediterranean and the Gravitas network on cultural heritage. In 2026 it also presented a Troy Pavilion, curated by Deniz Erbaş, at the 2nd Malta Biennale in Birgu.
