Press release
Reduced Volume, Shared Space is a solo exhibition of sculpture by Mohammad Hossein Emad at Etemad Gallery, No. 25, Shiroodi Dead End, Mofateh Avenue, Haft-e Tir Square, Tehran. It runs from 2 to 27 October 2026. The work illustrated on the gallery's page for the show is Untitled (2025), a unique wooden sculpture measuring 80 x 80 x 40 cm.
In the photograph the sculpture has a square plan and bulging sides that rise towards a small rectangular opening at the top. The wood is dark, and its surface is covered with fine cuts left by the tools that shaped it. The opening is the one point where the form is pierced.
A statement for the exhibition, published on the Persian-language listing site 100honar, says that Emad has spent decades looking for a new relation between volume and space. In his work, it says, space is part of the sculpture and helps to form it. The statement describes removing and reducing material as a feature of his personal language. What forms between the parts of a work, and the room it leaves for the viewer, belong to the sculpture as well.
Emad was born in 1957 in Arak, Iran. His first solo exhibition took place at Afrand Gallery, Tehran, in 1993, and he taught sculpture at the University of Art, Tehran, from 2006 to 2019. His public works in Tehran include the Beheshti Monument at Shahid Beheshti University Square and Wazir in Goft-o-Gu Park, both dated 2004. He has taken part in the Tehran Sculpture Biennials from the first edition in 1994 to the seventh in 2017. Etemad Gallery lists him among its represented artists.
