Press release
Patina is a solo exhibition by the Istanbul-based collective Oddviz at Art On Istanbul, in the gallery's Piyalepaşa space in Beyoğlu, from 12 September to 31 October 2026. It presents ten years of work by a group that scans streets, façades and objects by photogrammetry and builds three-dimensional digital replicas of them. The gallery's installation view shows the results as large prints hung on white walls.
The practice began with the Inventory series, which documented individual pieces of street furniture. Over the decade the scanning widened to take in architectural façades, coastlines and whole stretches of urban fabric, building a visual archive of the material memory of cities. Patina draws on works from across that period, some on loan from private collections, and adds new works that have not been shown before.
The pictures travel between cities. The cities include Istanbul and Basel, seen from their waterfronts, Berlin, seen through its graffiti, and Bangkok, seen through its crowded streets. The title refers to patina, the marks that time leaves on a surface. For Oddviz the word also covers wear, repair, intervention and use, all of which accumulate on public surfaces. The press release quotes Ceyda Tahan, the gallery's exhibition coordinator, on how names, stickers, lines and rust gather on a single object.
Oddviz was founded in 2016 and has three members: Çağrı Taşkın, Serkan Kaptan and Erdal İnci. It showed Inventory at Art On Istanbul in 2018 and returned in 2025 with Urban Artifacts. The collective also took part in group exhibitions at Erimtan Archaeology and Arts Museum in Ankara in 2022 and at Istanbul Modern in 2024. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am to 6.30pm.
