Press release
Atlas 1/137.035999 is a solo exhibition by Tayfun Erdoğmuş, born in Isparta in 1958, at Arter in Dolapdere, Istanbul. It opened to visitors on 24 June 2026 in the museum's Gallery 2, curated by Eda Berkmen, and runs into January 2027. The works are made from dried plants, minerals, handmade paper, metal leaf and chemical and acrylic solutions. They appear as canvases, works on paper, installations and structures built for the gallery.
Four groups of work sit at the entrance. Untitled (Logbooks), made in 1998 and 1999, uses Nepalese lokta paper in fold-out pages mounted in box-shaped frames, which staff open and turn at intervals during the run. Watermarks, from 2010 and 2011, was produced in Berlin with the papermaker Gangolf Ulbricht and shows white motifs on white paper in symmetrical pairs. Phantom Herbarium combines notebooks marked by drying plants, a vitrine of plants cut into geometric forms, and the scents of carnation, lily and rose. Radiant Fragments, from 2024 to 2026, places works in backlit vitrines along the corridor.
Visitors pass through the main gallery from light into darkness. Untitled (Natura) is a wall of works from 2004 to 2024, borrowed from collections and arranged by the artist as a single new piece. Rosa Damascena Molecular Structure (Chiral Pair), from 2026, is an installation of convex circular mirrors based on the chemical structure of rose fragrance. Untitled (Studies), made between 2018 and 2026, lies flat in a vitrine for viewing from above. Untitled (Weltschmerz) brings large works on paper together with dim lighting, video with sound, a staircase to nowhere and a metal frame the artist designed.
The title borrows the fine-structure constant, a dimensionless number that sets the strength of interaction between light and matter. Arter reads it as a coordinate for the artist's own geography of materials. Arter describes the show as his first institutional solo exhibition in Türkiye, drawing on more than forty years of work, with some pieces shown for the first time.
