About

Arter belongs to the Vehbi Koç Foundation. It opened in 2010 on İstiklal Caddesi, where it staged thirty-five exhibitions up to 2018. On 13 September 2019, the foundation's fiftieth anniversary year, it reopened in a new building in Dolapdere. Grimshaw Architects won the design competition in 2013, and construction ran from 2015 to 2019.

The building has 18,000 square metres of indoor space, about 5,000 of them given to exhibition space. It also holds two performance halls: Karbon, a black box with 242 seats, and the Sevgi Gönül Auditorium, with 140 seats. Learning studios, a library, a bookshop and a restaurant complete the programme of spaces. The façade is clad in panels of glass-fibre-reinforced concrete faced with handmade glazed ceramic.

Started in 2007, the collection had grown by 2022 to over 1,400 works from some 400 artists, dating from the 1960s onwards. Its media range from painting, drawing and print to sculpture, photography, film and video, as well as installation, sound, light and performance. Beside its exhibitions, Arter runs events in the performing arts, music, film and digital arts. It also has a learning programme and publishes books in Turkish and English.
