Biography

Tayfun Erdoğmuş was born in Isparta in 1958 and is based in Istanbul. He makes canvases, works on paper and installations from dried plants, minerals, handmade paper, metal leaf and chemical and acrylic solutions, building surfaces through layering and experiment.

He gathers plants on his travels and receives them from others. He dries them over months or years and sorts them in notebooks, where the marks left by drying plants are traces he does not draw himself. Untitled (Logbooks), made in 1998 and 1999 on Nepalese lokta paper, is one of his early series. Watermarks, made in Berlin in 2010 and 2011, uses papermaking itself to form the image. Arter's exhibition guide links his visual language to local traditions of calligraphy (hat) and illumination (tezhip).

Erdoğmuş graduated in 1979 from the painting department of the State School of Applied Fine Arts, took a doctorate at Marmara University in 1986 and became a professor in 1997. He has shown solo at Schering Kunstverein in Berlin in 1986 and at Galeri Nev Istanbul, which lists him among its artists. Group shows include Istanbul Modern, 2023. Atlas 1/137.035999 at Arter in 2026 is described by the museum as his first institutional solo exhibition in Türkiye. Works are in the Hacı Ömer Sabancı Foundation, OMM in Eskişehir and the Presidential Tarabya Mansion collections.
