Biography

Sina Boroumandi (b. 1980, Tehran, Iran) is an Iranian artist based in Tehran who works in photography. The subject is the ordinary urban landscape of contemporary Iran. The work looks at ideology in modern Iranian life across different historical periods. Boroumandi uses an indirect method, altering cameras and using long or double exposures. These images are set against direct, instantaneous shots. Some works are made by cutting photographic paper and reshaping it into sculptural form.

Early solo projects include Variations on a Theme of Balzac (2011) and Theoria (2013) in Tehran. In 2018 solo exhibitions titled In Between 1, In Between 2 and In Between opened in Glasgow, Berlin and Prague. Untitled (2018), shown in Not Yet Gone, is made from cut and reshaped photographic paper. Rethinking the Contemporary Art of Iran (Skira, 2023), edited by Hamid Keshmirshekan, includes Boroumandi on page 244.

Solo shows at O Gallery, Tehran, include The Redshift (2016), Echolocation (2018), Soft Matter (2020), The Hammer of Witches (2022) and Resident Undeadness (2024). Other solo exhibitions took place at Maryam Harandy Gallery, Tehran (2011), Aun Gallery, Tehran (2013), and 26 Art Gallery, Tehran (2015). Remembered Witnesses showed at Pszczyna Cultural Center, Pszczyna (2013). Simulacrum opened at Baltyk Gallery of Contemporary Art, Słupsk (2019), which also hosted the online show Overlap (2023). Group exhibitions include Beyond Time at Bielska Gallery, Bielsko-Biała (2013), and Back to the Roots at Lumina Gallery, Vienna (2015). Interlude Persan showed at Espace Reverdy, Université Paris Ouest Nanterre, Paris (2016). Later group shows include Still Point (2024) and Rooms of Light (2026) at O Gallery.
