Biography

Ayşe Gül Süter was born in Istanbul in 1982 and lives and works in the city. She makes glass sculptures and installations, among them large stained glass paintings and wall works of painted glass, in which colour and light are the main material. Her 2026 exhibition Light Constellation uses stainless steel points and rods.

Süter graduated in 2010 from the Animation and Digital Arts department at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. Her method draws on science. She collaborates with researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts, studying marine organisms under the microscope, and her Istanbul studio works as a laboratory for bacteria, crystals and plankton. In the series Echoes, glass is heated into a concave form and painted on both surfaces with industrial paint, so that each piece reflects light differently as the viewer moves.

She spent 2018 in Barcelona as an invited artist in residence at the Biomedical Research Institute, studying light optics and human cell structures. The research led to Microspheres, a solo exhibition of large stained glass paintings at Recinte Modernista Sant Pau in 2019. Her solo exhibitions at Pg Art Gallery include Motion (2013), Invisible Motion (2016), Diffusion (2018) and Path of Light (2022). She has also shown at Contemporary Istanbul and other fairs with the gallery.
