Press release
Palm Tree is a solo exhibition of paintings by the Egyptian artist Dina Targam at Picasso Art Gallery in Zamalek, Cairo, on view until 20 October 2026. The show brings together oil and mixed-media paintings on canvas that grew out of two years of work in her studio.
The studio is the subject as well as the setting. Picasso Art Gallery presents the new paintings as a turn towards that room: the light that enters it, the plants around it and its calm. In her own words the studio is "my studio, my sanctuary", a place she goes back to on hard days even when she is not painting. She has written that she looks at a palm tree there every day, and that it makes her think about how quickly something rooted and alive can be lost.
The gallery chose Light Found Its Way In, a 2025 painting in mixed media and oil on canvas measuring 90 by 140 cm, to announce the show. It looks through a pair of tall open doors towards a balcony, with potted plants, palm fronds and a chequered tiled floor. The paint is laid on in loose, visible strokes.
Targam was born in Cairo in 1990. She holds degrees in architectural engineering and visual arts, both completed at the American University in Cairo in 2012. Palm Tree is her fifth solo exhibition at Picasso Art Gallery. The earlier four were A New Beginning in 2017, a mother is in 2018, La Vie En Rose in 2020 and Daydreamers in 2021. It runs alongside Stages, a solo exhibition by Magdy Othman in the gallery's second hall. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 11am to 9pm.
