Press release
Ne tenir qu'à un fil is a solo exhibition by Mohamed Lekleti at the Musée de la Kasbah, Espace d'art contemporain, in Tangier. Its English title is To be Hanging by a Thread. It runs from 19 June to 30 November 2026 under the curatorship of Abdelaziz El Idrissi. The show gathers drawings, canvases and hybrid sculptures, together with pieces made in situ on the walls of the building.
Drawing is the base of each composition, layered densely with collage and textile. Certain motifs return from piece to piece: hands, threads, dark clouds, targets, circular machines, and twin or hybrid bodies. Microphones act as a metaphor for media discourse, and a map of the Mediterranean is frequent. One scene recurs often. A man holds a thread linked to a machine that has no function, while hands without bodies operate the machine. The pieces have no obvious common theme, but control or influence is at stake in almost all of them.
The exhibition visual reproduces Emporte-moi vers la lumière céleste, 2025, a diptych in mixed media on paper and rug measuring 110 x 160 cm. For Tangier he made a large painting, L'Ouragan de leur vie a pris toutes les pages. Its model is Théodore Géricault's The Raft of the Medusa, 1819, recast with migrants at sea in the Mediterranean. The space has many pillars and fixed partition walls. The artist has said he rethought the hang around colour harmony and contrast of form. He painted a narrow corridor an intense blue. It holds an installation on the theme of The Conference of the Birds, the poem by Farîd-ud-Dîn 'Attâr. Stuffed birds in his work refer to that text. His wider use of objects takes in wigs, African masks, prayer rugs and old Moroccan property deeds engraved in wood.
Born in Taza, Morocco, in 1965, Lekleti lives and works in Montpellier, France. In 2011 he was named laureate of Chic Dessin, the contemporary drawing salon in Paris. The exhibition belongs to Saison Méditerranée 2026, led by the Institut français. The Fondation Nationale des Musées du Maroc presents it with Frac Occitanie Montpellier. A second solo exhibition of his work, En déséquilibre, is held at Frac Occitanie Montpellier and closes on 23 December 2026.
