Biography

Yasmine El Meleegy is an Egyptian artist and sculptor, born in 1991, who lives and works in Cairo. Her practice spans sculpture, installation, writing and site-specific intervention. In her mosaics she sorts broken porcelain by hand and resets the pieces as figures, portraits and still lifes.

Her research follows Egypt's porcelain industry and the factory founded by the sculptor Fathy Mahmoud. Her website describes it as asking how household objects and nationhood were made side by side. Some projects unfold through public interaction. For Scaffolding a Familiar Epoch (2021), she restored the displays and facade of a downtown Cairo pharmacy, Stephenson Pharmacy, and added sound. Red Gold (2025), a Mattress Factory solo in Pittsburgh, cast salt into tiles picturing the Nile Valley's trade in sun-dried tomatoes. The Corrupting Sea (2026) sets salvaged Fathy Mahmoud porcelain in red-glazed mosaic panels.

She trained as a painter at Helwan University, Cairo, graduating in 2013, and took a multimedia diploma in Nîmes in 2014. In 2023 she held the solo show To Mend Is to Shatter at Gypsum Gallery, Cairo. Her group showings include the 12th Dak'Art Biennale in 2016. Shortlisted for the seventh Future Generation Art Prize, she joined its exhibition in Kyiv in 2024. The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Yinchuan hold her work.
