Biography

Seldem Kargı (b. 1985, Ankara, Turkey) is an artist based in Urla, İzmir, who works in mixed media on canvas, wood and paper. Her paintings are figurative and narrative, with womanhood and the inner process of her figures as themes. She often begins a work from a stanza or a sentence that occurs to her, with no preparatory sketch. Some canvases carry reused book pages and waste paper.

She taught music, piano and cello for many years, then left teaching to paint. From 2014 to 2017 she made handmade art books of personalised stories she wrote and illustrated. Since 2018 she has worked on canvas, first mainly in black and white and later in colour. Bir Tek Masa Sağlam Kaldı (2026), mixed media on canvas at 95 x 208 cm, is a long table scene on a yellow ground. A hatted man, an old woman and a figure with animal ears sit among plates, glasses and carafes.

She studied music education at Dokuz Eylül University, İzmir (2003 to 2007). Her solo exhibitions at C.A.M. Galeri, Istanbul, are Sensin Bensin (2022), Aklımın Dörtnalı (2024) and Who Are You? (2026). Group shows at the gallery include Her Story (2025) and Under The Same Sky (2026). She is represented by C.A.M. Galeri and was earlier known as Seldem Oskay.
