Biography

Mohammad Piryaee (b. 1985, Qom, Iran) is an artist based in Tehran. He makes sculpture in ceramic, scorched wood and resin, and draws and prints on paper. Architecture runs through both. The sculptures are abstracted building shapes, often with echoes of Persian and Islamic architecture, while the works on paper build semi-abstract forms out of monuments, interiors and still life.

For Stairway to Odessa, which opened at Dastan+2 in Tehran in December 2019, Piryaee built a staircase in the gallery modelled on the Potemkin Stairs in Odessa. He showed drawings with ceramic and wood pieces, some set on its steps. At Art Dubai in 2025, Parallel Circuit presented his crimson and black sculptures with drawings of towering monuments in Bawwaba, the section curated by Mirjam Varadinis. She has described the drawings as being about destruction while making new shapes.

Piryaee took a BA in handicrafts at Kashan University in 2007. Earlier solo exhibitions were Lazarus Was Dead (Drawing Collection) at Manuchehri House, Kashan, in 2015 and Red Tomb at Homa Gallery, Tehran, in 2017. Choom Gallery in Bandar-e Anzali showed Autobiography in 2020. Group exhibitions include Good News from Iran in Geneva in 2013 and in Munich in 2014. His work is in the collection of the Contemporary Art Museum of Khuzestan, Ahvaz.
