Biography

Behdad Lahooti (b. 1976, Tehran, Iran) is an Iranian sculptor. He works mainly in metal, as well as wood, plaster, resin, ceramic and fabric. His sculptures include fruit, plant and body forms, cast or fabricated. Examples are a sliced lemon, a pomegranate and a split pod in brass, polished aluminium and copper-coated fibreglass, and clasped hands in bronze. Seated (2022) is a concrete figure in trousers with no upper body.

Lahooti has made installations and conceptual work since 2005. His series Chahanchah shares its title with his 2008 solo show at Aaran Gallery in Tehran. In it, household items such as a dustpan, a watering can and a portable gas can are marked with cuneiform, carved or painted. The dustpan bears lines from a Xerxes inscription at Persepolis. In A Cliché for Mass Media, made in response to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, urinals carry his replies to statements by Iranian politicians.

Lahooti held solo exhibitions at Aaran Gallery in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2016, at Nicolas Flamel Gallery, Paris, in 2018 and at XVA Gallery, Dubai, in 2025. He showed at the Tehran Sculpture Biennial in 2007 and 2017. He sat on the board of the Association of Iranian Sculptors from 2010 to 2012 and 2014 to 2016. In 2025 he headed the Board of Directors of the Iranian Sculptors Association.
