Mohamed Hamidi

Mohamed Hamidi (1941 to 2025) was a Moroccan painter, born in Casablanca, where he lived and worked. He painted with colours prepared from natural pigments, and his motifs, drawn from craft, Islamic architecture and Amazigh and African symbols, moved towards abstraction.

He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Casablanca from 1956 and continued his training in Paris at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. From 1967 to 1975 he taught at the School of Fine Arts in Casablanca alongside Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi and Mohamed Chabâa. In 1969 he took part in the open-air exhibition on Jemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech. He was a founding member of the Association marocaine des arts plastiques.

Two of his works entered the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2019, and his work is also held by the Musée Mohammed VI d'Art Moderne et Contemporain in Rabat. He died on 6 October 2025. From 3 December 2025 to 25 March 2026 the Fondation Nationale des Musées presented an exhibition of his work at the Villa Carl Ficke, musée de la mémoire de Casablanca.
