Biography

Marianne Fahmy is an Egyptian artist, born in Alexandria in 1992, who still lives and works in the city. She works mainly in film and installation. Her practice also takes in photography, sculpture and textile, from jacquard tapestries in wool, cotton and lurex to embroidery with soft pastel on monk's cloth.

Her films weave invented stories out of real historical events. She mixes archival and found material with her own images. Sources have included the diaries of an Egyptian oceanographer and the papers of a disused Alexandria railway station. Seas and deserts return again and again. Gypsum Gallery links the approach to "parafiction" and "fabulation". Key works include the films What things may come (2019), Magic Carpet Land (2020) and Laws of Ruins (2024), and the Atlas series of acrylic sculptures (2020).

Fahmy took a BA in Painting at Alexandria University in 2015 and joined the MASS Alexandria programme in 2016. Her work has appeared at Dak'Art in 2018, Manifesta 12 and 13, the 7th Yokohama Triennale in 2020 and Sharjah Biennial 15 in 2023. Her first solo show at Pedro Cera in Lisbon, Remnants from a Distant Storm, opened in November 2024. She received a Prince Claus Fund Seed Award in 2021. Frac Bretagne and Sharjah Art Foundation hold her work.
