Biography
Essam Darwish (b. 1970, Egypt) is a sculptor who works in bronze, granite and marble and also makes charcoal drawings. He is based in Cairo. His work ranges from bronze figures and carved stone to portrait statues and public works for squares and institutions. He describes two lines in his practice: figurative realism, and simplification towards abstraction.
In 2013 he held two solo exhibitions of plant forms, About Plants and Botanical Reflections, at Ofoq One Hall, Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum, Cairo. Solo shows at Al Masar Gallery followed with Vital (2014) and Vitality and Existence (2016). His 2026 solo exhibition at Al Mashhad Gallery, Zamalek, curated by Ehab Ellabban, brought together about fifty-five bronze sculptures and charcoal drawings. Its figures come from rural and popular Egyptian life: the farmer, the peasant woman, the schoolgirl, the dervish and the woman in a melaya laff. Named works include Harvest, River Silt, Column of Bread and The Cheese Seller. His public works include a bronze statue of Saleh Selim at Al Ahly Club, Cairo (2007). In 2021 a bronze of about ten metres on a granite base was installed in Port Said, overlooking the northern entrance of the Suez Canal.
Darwish studied sculpture to doctoral level at the Faculty of Art Education, Helwan University, where he became a professor in the Sculpture Department. He took part in the Beijing International Art Biennale in 2008 and 2010 and the 13th Cairo International Biennale in 2019. His work is held by the Museum of Egyptian Modern Art, Cairo, and the Aswan Open Air Museum. Further works are in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the National Art Museum of China, Beijing. In 2025 he received the Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Literature for sculpture. Mohamed Kamal's monograph on his work was published in 2026.
