Biography

Ayman Khoury is an Egyptian photographer, described by D-CAF, the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival in Cairo, as Egyptian-French. His exhibition Tulun Mosque takes the Mosque of Ibn Tulun in Cairo as its subject, and the two photographs the festival has published to announce it are in black and white.

In Tulun Mosque, the size of the building is set against the Sufi ritual of dhikr, or remembrance. Khoury looks at the plain surfaces and small details of the architecture, and his dhikr pictures bring in the people and the devotion of the place. D-CAF announced the show with an image that looks through a dark opening into the courtyard. A figure sits on a bench there, with the dome of the ablution fountain and the spiral minaret behind.

D-CAF's 14th edition presents Tulun Mosque, a solo exhibition of Khoury's photographs of the mosque, from 25 October to 1 November 2026. It is held at Beit Tulun, the house facing the mosque, and the festival calls it the first edition of the exhibition. On 27 October 2026 Khoury joins Dr Mona Zakaria and Dr May al-Ibrashy there for Architecture of the Soul, a talk on the mosque.
