Amir Hazim

Amir Hazim is an Iraqi visual artist and photographer born in Baghdad. He works mainly in photography, in cinematic black and white and in vivid colour, with strong use of light and shadow. His wider practice also takes in sound, sculpture, painting and installation.

Hazim's work draws on memories of his early life in central Baghdad after 2003 and on the city's social history. His portraits, street scenes and personal observations mix melancholy memory with visions of the future. During a residency at Villa Clivio in Mompantero, Italy, in July 2025, he photographed visitors and architectural surfaces marked by time.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Baghdad and has developed his practice largely on his own. He showed with Zawyeh Gallery at RAF 3rd Edition in Ramallah in 2022. In 2024 he co-curated The Circle Was a Point with Sama Alshaibi, drawn from the Barjeel Art Foundation's photography collection and shown at Foundry. His work appears in Phenomenological Alphabet at NYU Abu Dhabi (2026).
