Ali Al Hammadi

Ali Al Hammadi (b. 1976, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates) is an Emirati calligrapher. He writes classical Arabic calligraphy, chiefly Fatimid Kufic and Jali Diwani, and makes illuminated and ornamented panels.

He began by teaching himself Kufic from a book by the calligrapher Hasan Qasim Habash, found in Sharjah's public library. He then studied at the Sharjah Calligraphy Centre, learning Ruq'a with Mohammad Farouk Haddad, then Jali Diwani, Naskh and Thuluth. He studied illumination and ornament with the Iraqi artist Musab Al Douri. Al Hammadi keeps to the classical rules of each script and has said that he sees no need to modernise the letter. His panel Hilya was shown in History of Arabic Calligraphy in the UAE at Al Shindagha Museum, during the 2023 Dubai Calligraphy Biennale.

Al Hammadi also collects calligraphers' tools, manuscripts and Qur'ans, which he keeps in a private museum at home and shows at exhibitions and cultural institutions. In 2026 the UAE Journalists Association showed his collection in Nafa'is al-Midad at its Dubai headquarters. He has taken part in the Sharjah Calligraphy Forum and the Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival. He is a member of the Emirates Fine Arts Society and works in journalism. The Sharjah Calligraphy Forum named him one of its three honourees in 2026.
