A new fair for the MENA region

Basel, Miami, Hong Kong, Paris, and now…Qatar! Doha is set to host the first Art Basel in Qatar in February 2026. Art Basel, and its parent company MCH Group, are partnering with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+ to present the inaugural MENA-based edition in the new year. But what are the fair’s intentions? While Qatar is famous for its museums, it is not known for its gallery scene and most would be hard pressed to name a contemporary Qatari artist. While many may see this as a good move for the region, others are unsure if Qatar is the obvious choice. Is the fair’s motive to generate more income for itself and its galleries from an audience famed for preferring art from the West? We have our concerns.

While the MENA region already has a number of art fairs including Art Cairo, Art Dubai and Abu Dhabi Art, this will be the first fair in Qatar, and it’s a big one. Art Basel is one of the most prestigious art fairs in the world, but Qatar seems like an unobvious choice. That said, there seems to be a race between Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE for the reputation of being the go-to MENA art hub, so perhaps Qatar has gone into business with Art Basel to take that spot.

The first edition is rumoured to host around 50 galleries - the majority of which will likely fly in for the fair - which will be selected by a yet-to-be-announced artistic director, with a focus on galleries from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. The fair will take place near to the National Museum of Qatar in the M7 creative hub and the Doha Design District in downtown Msheireb, with a plan to increase gallery representation year on year.

In Art Basel’s recent market report for 2025, it was reported that sales in the global art market declined by 12% - or an estimated $57.5 billion - in 2024. While the MENA region was hardly featured in the report, a reorientation of the art market towards the Middle East and North Africa may be a smart move. Sotheby’s inaugural auction in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, earlier this year brought in $17.3 million, while the region’s standout fair - Art Dubai - has just hosted its 19th edition with no signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, both Qatar and Saudi Arabia have their sights set on diversifying their economies by 2030 through cultural investment, resulting in initiatives such as this year’s debut Art Week Riyadh and Design Doha. The MENA region is in the centre of the globe, so while Doha is seen as a surprising choice by many, this could be a geographically smart move for the fair.

In its press release, Art Basel stated that the Qatar fair will: “Offer a gateway into the creative culture of the Middle East for the stakeholders and audiences of Art Basel and expand the circle of collectors, gallerists, artists and cultural leaders from the MENA region and around the world.” The presence of such a prestigious fair in the region is bound to increase interest in MENA art. Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, said, “As Qatar Museums marks its twentieth anniversary, we are pleased to welcome the Art Basel organisation as our partner to further elevate Qatar’s initiatives to support the creative industries of our region, offering exceptional new artistic experiences and opportunities to our talent.”

The Qatar venture brings together an interesting mix of collaborators, teaming up with QSI, a major investor in sports, culture, entertainment and lifestyle, and QC+ a strategic and creative collective specialising in cultural commerce. His Excellency Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Chairman of QSI, said, “As a leading investor in sports, culture, entertainment and lifestyle, QSI is very proud and excited to play a role in bringing the world-renowned Art Basel fair to Qatar and our region as part of the legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. As that event demonstrated so unforgettably, sports and culture are closely linked in their capacity to unite people and bring the world together, which is at the heart of QSI’s mission. We are delighted to work with QC+ and to welcome Art Basel to Qatar, a partnership that will inspire the region and bring further investment to a great cultural organisation.”

Art Basel has more than 50 years’ experience curating art fairs around the world, but this will be its first fair in the MENA region. “We are very proud to work with QSI and QC+. This is a groundbreaking project based on the unity of intent of ambitious organisations and we believe we will build something completely new that will attract art buyers and fans from the region and all over the world”, says Andrea Zappia, Chairman and Group CEO at MCH Group, adding, “We are committed to Art Basel’s growth and following the launch of Art Basel Paris in 2022 we are ready to add a fifth fair to our exclusive and successful portfolio.” Noah Horowitz, Chief Executive Officer of Art Basel, added, “Growing the global art market, supporting artists and galleries and developing new collecting audiences is core to Art Basel’s mission. The art scene across the MENA region has undergone exponential growth in recent decades, with the establishment of world-class institutions, the launch of leading cultural events and the growth of a vibrant community of artists, galleries and professionals. We are compelled by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s singular vision for the arts ecosystem in Qatar, and we share a commitment to supporting artists in realising their highest potential. We are equally energised by the opportunities unlocked by our collaboration with QSI and QC+ to create new touchpoints for the broadest possible audiences. Qatar’s depth of collections, history of building great cultural institutions and unique role as an incubator and supporter of talent position the new Art Basel Qatar for success on the world stage.”

The inaugural Art Basel Qatar is timed to take place just before Ramadan begins in early February, two months before Art Dubai launches its 20th edition in April. With Art Basel Miami typically taking place in December and Art Basel Hong Kong in March, the art fair calendar for 2026 looks packed already. There are mixed opinions about a Qatar fair in the region. We’ll be eager to see what unfolds.
