About

The National Museum of Qatar opened to the public on 28 March 2019 on Museum Park Street in Doha. Part of Qatar Museums, it tells the story of Qatar and its people. Its director is Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Hamad Al Thani.

Jean Nouvel designed the building after the desert rose, a crystal form found in Qatar's desert. It wraps around the restored palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, once his home and the seat of government. Eleven galleries carry the story, and several show art films commissioned from directors and artists including Jananne Al-Ani, Abderrahmane Sissako, Mira Nair and Doug Aitken.

Art also runs through the grounds. Jean-Michel Othoniel's ALFA sets 114 fountain sculptures along the lagoon, and Simone Fattal's Gates to the Sea marks the entrance. The museum hosts art exhibitions too: Manzar, on art and architecture from Pakistan, in 2024, and Giuseppe Penone: The Inner Flow of Life, opening on 26 October 2026.
