About
Elgiz Museum is a private, non-profit museum of contemporary art in Maslak, Istanbul. The collectors Sevda and Can Elgiz founded it in 2001, and the museum presents itself as Turkey's first museum of contemporary art. It occupies a space of about 2,000 square metres.
In its first years the institution worked as an experimental platform for young artists and curators. In 2005 the family turned it into a private collection museum and gave it its present name. One section shows the Elgiz family collection on a permanent basis, while the other hosts temporary exhibitions and education programmes. Since 2010 a terrace of about 2,000 square metres has served as an open-air sculpture area, with a themed call to young sculptors each year.
The museum received the ARCO "A" Award for International Collection in 2013 and an honour award from Turkey's Contemporary Arts Foundation in 2014. It is a founding member of the Global Private Museum Network and a member of ICOM, the International Council of Museums.
