About

Bin Matar House, also known as Memory of the Place, is a restored house in Muharraq run by the Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research. It opened in February 2009. The house honours the merchant Salman bin Matar and his family. Its main rooms tell their story and their part in the pearl trade.

The bank Arcapita paid for the restoration. The work kept the building's character, and one part became a gallery that has held local, Arab and international exhibitions since it opened in 2009. The programme for 2026 and 2027 includes exhibitions by Zahrah Alghamdi, Ghada Khunji and Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa.

The Centre's gift shop is in the house and sells its cultural, literary and artistic publications, souvenirs and handmade products. Visitors can also buy the one-day culture pass for the Centre's houses here. The Centre, founded in 2002, runs a group of restored houses in Muharraq and Manama given over to press heritage, music, poetry and a children's library.
