Gypsum Gallery

Gypsum was founded in Cairo in 2013 by the curator Aleya Hamza, with an international programme focused on engagement with social, political and formal questions. Its aim, in the gallery's words, is to bring the progressive and investigative practices nurtured by Cairo's non-profit sector into a commercial gallery setting.

The gallery opened in a renovated apartment in Zamalek, later moved to Garden City and now occupies a ground-floor apartment in Degla, Maadi. It works with artists from Egypt, the wider region, Europe and the United States, among them Maha Maamoun, Basim Magdy, Huda Lutfi and Mona Marzouk, whose work is held by institutions including the Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim.
