Where Am I? (وينّي أنا؟)

Kalim Bechara Art Gallery in Downtown Beirut presents Where Am I? (وينّي أنا؟), a solo exhibition by the Palestinian-American artist Dina Ali, from 11 September to 3 October 2026. The exhibition opened on Friday 11 September.

In Where Am I?, according to the gallery, Ali "explores the surreal spaces shaped by technological expansion and shifting power, and how these forces transform our relationship to place and to one another". The exhibition catalogue puts it more sharply: she builds environments that slowly come apart, and "each scene holds, but refuses to add up. The disorientation and alienation are the point."

The works, all dated 2026, are in acrylic, ink and coloured pencil on canvas and paper, most of them measuring 102 by 77 cm. Their titles include Also Asking the Same Question, Floating House 1, That Ground Level Window, It Was All Once a Whole, Fragments that Once Were, Waiting for the Algorithm to Make Sense, Third Floor, Approximately, Inside Outside, and a Box and The Silos of Space. The image chosen for the invitation shows fractured planes of colour, stairs and small trees stacked into an unstable architecture.

Born in Saudi Arabia in 1975, Dina Ali is based in Los Angeles. She trained in architecture, urban design and city planning, holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, and works across painting, drawing and material experimentation. The gallery's catalogue describes a practice that treats space "not simply as a physical structure, but as a repository of memory, experience, and human presence". Her work has been supported by residencies and grants including the Golden Foundation, Misk Art Institute, the Hambidge Center and the Puffin Foundation.

The exhibition brings an architect's reading of displacement and belonging to a gallery in Beirut's rebuilt city centre, and gives the question in its title in both English and Lebanese Arabic.
