Press release
Sourat Masr (Image of Egypt) is a group exhibition at the Complex of Arts in the Aisha Fahmy Palace, Zamalek, Cairo. It runs from 30 June to 6 October 2026. The Fine Arts Sector organised it to mark the anniversary of 30 June.
The show traces the struggle of Egyptians from the thirteenth century to the 30 June revolution. It brings together paintings, sculpture, documents, photographs and pages of historic newspapers. Named paintings include Bahr El Baqar by Mostafa Mahdy, lent by the Mansoura National Museum, and Peace by Abdel Hadi El Gazzar. Others are Greatness of the Ancient Egyptians by Kawkab El Assal, Geneva Conference by Ahmed Kamal and Nationalisation of the Suez Canal by Hamed Nada. Battle of Port Said 1956 by Mohamed Mohamed Sabry is also shown, as are paintings of the battles of Mansoura and Fariskur in 1250. Original photographs record the popular resistance in Port Said in 1956.
Artists named at the opening include Seif Wanly, Hamed Nada, Abdel Hadi El Gazzar, Hamed Ewais, El Hussein Fawzi, Gazbia Sirry, Zeinab El Sageeny, Ahmed Nawar, Youssef Sida, Sabry Mansour and Mostafa El Feki. The curator is Ali Saeed, director of the arts centres. He describes the image of Egypt as not fixed but made of accumulated layers: strength and defeat, building and resistance, document and street, individual and collective.
The works come from eleven museums and sites of the Fine Arts Sector, according to its head, Mahmoud Hamed. They include the Museum of Egyptian Modern Art, the Gezira Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Alexandria and the Mahmoud Said Museums Centre. Loans also come from the Mostafa Kamel, Mohamed Naghi, Denshway and Mansoura National museums, Al Nasr Museum in Port Said and the Municipal Library.
