Press release
Duet is a solo exhibition of paintings by Salwa Noureldin at SANDS Art Gallery in Garden City, Cairo, from 22 September to 12 October 2026.
The works are figurative paintings, many of women and girls. The gallery writes that in her work a portrait "does not begin with the face. It begins with an attempt to see beyond it." She does not approach a photograph "as an image to be reproduced, but as a starting point for discovering the person within it: a fleeting moment, a glance, a gesture, or a small detail we may have seen many times without ever truly noticing." In the paintings, the gallery adds, "Some details are revealed with clarity, while others fade, break apart, or dissolve into their surroundings."
Youm7 reports that the works move between realism and abstraction and deal with human feeling and with a person's relation to themselves and their surroundings. The paper presents the exhibition as a continuation of her artistic career, which she pursues alongside her work in art education.
Duet runs alongside Painting, a solo exhibition by Mustafa Isa, on the same dates at SANDS. A catalogue of the exhibition is available from the gallery.
