Biography

Younes Ben Slimane, a Tunisian artist and filmmaker, trained as an architect and lives and works in Tunis. He studied at the École Nationale d'Architecture et d'Urbanisme before turning to contemporary art. Working in film, video, drawing and installation, he keeps architecture and the visual arts in conversation, testing what each medium can and cannot do.

His first short documentary, All Come From Dust, competed in the Pardi di domani section at Locarno in 2019 and received the Tanit d'Or of the Carthage Film Days. We Knew How Beautiful They Were, These Islands (2022), produced by Le Fresnoy, follows a stranger who digs graves at night and keeps watch over the dead. The objects they leave behind carry the story. The work won him the Prix Studio Collector in 2021.

His first exhibition, Ready-to-Burn, was shown at Jaou Tunis in 2018, and he has held a residency at Dar Eyquem in Hammamet. In 2019 he showed in group exhibitions at B7L9, Gabès Cinéma Fen, the Institut français in Tunis and the Museum of Contemporary Art Skopje. He joined Le Fresnoy in 2020 and took part in documenta fifteen. His work has also been seen at Mucem in Marseille and Selma Feriani Gallery in Sidi Bou Saïd, and was selected for the 2024 Biennale de Dakar.
