Biography

Suha Shoman is a Palestinian artist, born in Jerusalem in 1944 and based in Amman, Jordan. Her work spans painting, works on paper in sand and mixed media, and video installations of projected water, rock and light.

After law studies in Beirut and Paris, Shoman settled in Jordan in 1974. In 1976 she began studying at Amman's Fahrelnissa Zeid Royal Institute of Fine Arts; Zeid stayed her teacher and mentor until 1991. Petra became a lasting source for her painting: The Legend of Petra (1988), then Petra II (1992 to 1993), a series of twenty-one works. In the early 2000s she turned to video. Of Time and Light (2004) and I Am Everywhere (2006) were followed by Bayyaratina (2009), on her grandfather's orange groves in Beit Hanoun, Gaza.

Solo shows include Galaxies d'Orient at the Wally Findlay Gallery, Paris (1984), and The Legend of Petra II (1993) at Amman's Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. She took part in the 7th Sharjah Biennial (2005), the 2nd Singapore Biennale (2008) and we refuse_d at Mathaf, Doha (2025). The Institut du Monde Arabe gave her the Prix de la Chaire in 2019. With her husband Khalid she founded Darat al Funun, opened in 1993. Her work is held by the Barjeel Art Foundation and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts.
