Samira Badran

Samira Badran (b. 1954, Libya) is a Palestinian artist based in Barcelona, Spain. She works in etching and aquatint, painting, ink and watercolour drawing, collage, installation and interventions on photographs. She has also made animated film.

She was born into an artistic Palestinian family. Her father was the artist Jamal Badran (1909 to 1999). She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cairo from 1971 to 1976. From 1978 to 1982 she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Early prints include Roots Green (1979), an etching and aquatint, and Plants (1980s), an etching with collage. Her animated film Memory of the Land (2017), made with Jaume Serra Torrello, combines acrylic on paper, collage, ink and pencil drawing and hand-worked photographs.

Solo exhibitions include the British Council, Amman (1987), the Shoman Foundation, Amman (1995) and Memory of the Land at Darat al Funun, Amman (2017). She took part in Forces of Change at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC (1994). Later came No Man's Land? at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (2008) and Sharjah Biennial 9 (2009). Her work was in Jerusalem Lives at the Palestinian Museum, Birzeit (2017). Her work is in the Khalid Shoman Collection at Darat al Funun, Amman.
