Biography

Samer Selbak, born in 1991, is a Palestinian designer based in Paris. Selbak's Luffa collection combines naturally dyed luffa with steel and cellulose paper in pendant lights and a space divider.

Selbak's starting point is Palestinian culture and the historical knowledge it holds. Using natural materials and traditional savoir-faire, the practice explores the ties between people and the natural world. Featured by Dezeen in 2024, the Luffa collection includes the Saffeer and Nafaq pendant lights and the Reef space divider. Their luffa is dyed with red cabbage, onion skin and avocado skin. Other projects include Hollow Nest, Enlighter and Treehab.

Selbak completed a master's degree in Product Design at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, in 2022, and received the Révélation Design 2022 award from ADAGP for Luffa Project. Les ombres portées, a solo presentation, followed at ADAGP in Paris in 2023. Luffa Project has been shown at Paris Design Week (2022), at Alcova during Milan Design Week (2023), and at Dutch Design Week and Dubai Design Week (2024). Selbak took part in Arab Design Now at Design Doha in 2024 and returns for Arab Design Now 2026. Selbak is also shortlisted for the Design Doha Prize 2026 in the Craft category.
