Biography
Moza Almatrooshi is an Emirati artist and chef based in Sharjah. Her practice draws on lost or erased mythology from the Arabian Peninsula and links it to how people see today. She works through performance, moving image, sound, ceramics, text and cooking. Food runs through her work as a way to tell stories, to hold memory and to look at labour and power.
She gained a BFA from Zayed University in Dubai in 2013 and a master's degree in fine art from the Slade in London in 2019. In 2020 she added a culinary diploma from ICCA Dubai. From 2014 to 2015 she was a fellow of the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Emerging Artists Fellowship. She held residencies at A.i.R. Dubai (2015 to 2016) and Townhouse Gallery, Cairo (2019).
Her work has been presented at the Victoria and Albert Museum (2019) and the ICA (2020), both in London, and at Lahore Biennale 02 (2020). Through her studio, Ballad, she hosts dinners in which guests walk a landscape before eating a meal drawn from it. In The Alphabetics of the Baker she turned the gestures of bakers into sculptural bread.
