Joumana Mortada

Joumana Mortada (b. 1998, Damascus, Syria) is a painter who lives and works in Dubai. She makes abstract paintings in layered, dripping colour, and she also paints murals and makes installations. In her paintings each colour carries a meaning: red for anger and blood, yellow for hope, blue and green for nature and black for suffering.

She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University. Her graduation project, Between Nature and Colour, used charcoal pen and acrylic paint. In 2022 she made the street installation I'm here for Once Upon a Time Window. The artist Bouthaina Ali led that project in Damascus and Aleppo. Collective Rage belongs to a series on the rage, sadness, hope and fear lived by Syrian artists.

In 2023 she showed paintings in Colours at Art House, Damascus, sharing the exhibition with the collage artist Ayat Al-Zoubi. She moved to the United Arab Emirates in January 2025. Collective Rage was shown in the group exhibition 6:18, The DAWN at Atelier 14, Dubai, in 2025. In 2026 she took part in the first Studio Support Program at Dom Art Projects, Dubai.
