Biography

Halil Altındere was born in 1971 in Mardin, Turkey, and lives and works in Istanbul. He makes videos, sculptures, installations, photographs and performances, and has also worked as a curator and publisher.

His work deals with migration, identity and gender, and with the ways marginalised people resist oppressive systems. Many projects are made together with the people whose lives they describe, from street vendors and hip-hop musicians to ballet dancers. Wonderland and Nurse were shown in his solo exhibitions at TANAS in Berlin. Space Refugee was presented at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein in 2016 and at Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York in 2017. Köfte Airlines was made for the festival The Aesthetics of Resistance at HAU Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin.

MoMA PS1 in New York gave Wonderland a solo exhibition. Other solo shows took place at Kunstpalais Erlangen in 2016, Yapı Kredi Culture and Arts in Istanbul in 2019 and the Museum of Troy in Çanakkale in 2023. He took part in documenta 12 in Kassel, the 31st Bienal de São Paulo in 2014, the 9th Berlin Biennale in 2016 and the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. His work has appeared in several editions of the Istanbul Biennial, and Arter holds it in its collection.
