Biography
Fayçal Berkat was born in Biskra, where he lives. He is a self-taught painter who uses oil on canvas and watercolour on paper. His pictures are landscapes and views of buildings, most of them set in Biskra and the surrounding oases, with some scenes of Algiers.
He began with drawing and with pictures made in sand before turning to painting. Press accounts place his approach between realism and impressionism. For the 2025 series Touches he painted the ksour houses of Chetma in watercolour from photographs he took himself. His oil paintings from the same period show El Kantara, Mchouneche, the Boukhalfa forest and the gorges of El Ghoufi.
His 2024 exhibition Hanin al-Amakin at Galerie Aïcha Haddad in Algiers comprised 38 paintings. It recorded Biskra sites that have been lost or neglected, including the Royal hotel and the railway station. In 2025 he showed Amakine, a group of 28 works, at Galerie Ezzou'Art in Algiers, followed by Touches at Galerie Aïcha Haddad. Lumières des oasis opens at the same gallery in October 2026.
